Summer Slide

Summer slide "is the tendency for students, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year."  https://www.cde.state.co.us/cdelib/summerslide

Turn summer slide into summer fun for everyone!

Read with your child every day for 20 minutes.

Enjoy talking with your child about books they read; shows they watch; things they notice in the community.

Use everyday activities to practice reading and math skills:

  • Match socks-Why do these socks go together? Is there another way to sort the socks?

  • Create number stories/word problems: ex. set the table-How many spoons, forks and knives do we need for four of us? If grandma and grandpa join us how many more forks, spoons and knives will we need? What's the number sentence/equation you would use to solve this problem?

  • Bake and cook together.

  • Count cars- Red cars? Fords? Two doors?  Four doors? Trucks with more than four wheels?

  • Read menus, billboards, signs.

  • Describe things you see-dogs; people; playgrounds, shapes in the cloud.

  • Ask: I wonder why? Can you tell me more? What might happen next?

  • Listen to audio books when driving, they can make car trips seem shorter.
