A Little About Me
Me

Welcome to first grade at Roosevelt Elementary. My name is Amy Truchan (pronounced TRUE-SH-ON). I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. This will be my 23rd year of teaching at Roosevelt but my tenth year at teaching first grade. I have taught kindergarten for 11 years and 2nd & 4th at the beginning of my teaching career.

I grew up and attended elementary through college here in Livonia. I worked at Jackson Center for four years right out of high school. I've been married for twenty years. I adopted 2 adorable but mischievous cats (Sherby & Kingsley) that are now 3 years old and are truly like raising children. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your family as well.

VOLUNTEER CALENDAR

Here is the link to my Google Doc where you can sign up to volunteer in the classroom. Simply click on the title above, then at the bottom of the page, pick the desired month tab. Type your name in the box next to the date you want, wait a few seconds for it to be saved and you're done. Dark purple represents the weekends and light purple are school days with no volunteering. If you can not access this link, please let me know. I have had some parents in the past say they can't open it on their phones which could happen if you do not have Google Drive. I can always fill your name in on a day you want. If you can not make it in on your scheduled day at the last minute, please email me. You MUST have an approved ICHAT form on file at Central Office to volunteer because you will be working in the hallway. As of this posting, I have 13 parents approved. If you are not sure if you are, simply jot me a note or an email. Right below this section is a link to the ICHAT request. You will be listening to kids read, over seeing them use an iPad app, playing a math game, practicing their sight words, catching kids up on missed work, etc. All of these activities will be done in small groups or 1-on-1 in the hallway. Sometimes you'll only work with a only few kids on that day verses the whole class in small groups. Math games will always be the whole class. If there's extra time, I may need you to cut, staple, or do a small errand if you don't mind. Mr. Green often has school assemblies every other Friday. I do not have a prescheduled list of these days so if you sign up for a Friday, I can at least let you know 5 days in advance if I have to cancel it as they occur at 9:15 am. Thanks for your support in advance!

Winter Clothes     I’ve noticed many kids without gloves going outside for recess. I don't know if they are forgetting them in their locker or simply don't have them. When I do recess duty, I put on thermal boots, a hat and wool gloves, and I'm cold. So just imagine how no gloves, no hat or hood, and thin leggings feel. Yikes! The kids go outside as long as the temperature and wind chill is above 15 degrees.

I've even been amazed at how cold the kid’s hands have been, even with the small knitted gloves. So if possible, please send in thick gloves/mittens or at least a second knit pair, thick boots, and especially something for their ears, especially now that winter is in full swing. Last year, their gloves were wet after playing in the snow because the snow made their gloves wet and they were still wet for second recess. Names on things is great too! When the kids start wearing boots to school, it’s so easy to forget to send shoes to switch into so if you’d like to keep an extra pair at school, that’s fine. Also, for kids to play in the snow, they need to have snow pants & boots. If they don't have these items, they will need to stay on the black top.

Popcorn Days: The PTA would prefer that the Popcorn Day money be prepaid to avoid dealing with money and popping the popcorn. So if you haven’t prepaid and you’d like to, you can probably still send in $3.50 for the last 7 days remaining.

Cough Drops Did you know that in our Roosevelt handbook, it states that children should not be coming to school with cough drops? I cut and pasted the blurb below for you from our school website. I know kids are starting to fight colds but as I witnessed in class a short time ago, children share them with their friends which is not safe.

Here’s the description: Please do not send medication to school without the (medical) form. This includes any over-the-counter medications, such as cough drops, aspirin, etc. Because of obvious dangers to other pupils, children are not to carry any medicine with them in school to take at their own discretion, with the exception of inhalers and the principal’s approval.

Absence Verification Form (from Mr. Green) Absences must be verified by families. They can either call our school’s attendance line at 734-744-2775 or better yet, enter their child’s information directly on the Absence Verification Form on our website. Daily phone reminders still go out to families. https://docs.google.com/a/livoniapublicschools.org/forms/d/1ehswQZ2cCHcwS6XRrjvl80_Jr9UbPS99htpUk5tB86o/viewform

"Misc" can be doing various things with students, an art project, or doing a task for me. Thanks for you support in advance!
